Napoli Flashback 89/90: Matchday 3

In this midweek evening fixture, Napoli hit the road to meet with Marcello Lippi’s Cessna and look to make it 3 out of 3 for the season. The “Made In Italy” approach continues just a few days after taking out Udinese in their San Paolo debut. On a funny side note, this will ironically mark the third straight club who wear black and white, not named Juventus, for a home kit, albeit Cesena don’t wear stripes.

This match was not without some drama and gritty play with a lot of near misses for both sides.  Each team had a call for penalties that were not given, and both Garella and Cesena keeper Sebastiano Rossi had a brilliant save each in a match that kept us on our toes. The 61st minute saw Napoli’s first red card of the season when Marco Baroni and Cesena’s Vladislav Djukic we’re both sent off in the 61st minute.  In the end, neither team could break the deadlock as the match ended 0-0. Napoli still unbeaten and still without the South American superstars in Alemão, Careca and most notably, Maradona.

While Zola has been doing a decent job in his absence, we still only have seen 2 goals is the first 3 matches, and while the Napoli defense hasn’t given a goal up yet, the fans were growing a bit frustrated at the lack of spark and magic that “el pibe de oro” offers to the club. Not withstanding that, Napoli stay joint first with Inter and Juve, and will stay on the road for their next match in a few days with their heated rivals, Hellas Verona, who are the only team in the league who have not yet snagged a point.
